Growing:
Seeds should be kept moist and not permitted to dry or freeze as they will lose viability. These seeds need to be stratified by moist cold storage for 70–100 days at 35–45 °F (2–7 °C) (some suggest 90–120 days). After stratification the seed should be sown 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep in a well-aerated soil mix, pH 5.5-7, with an optimum temperature of 75° – 85° F (24° – 29° C).
Use tall containers, such as tree pots (14 in – 18 in / 35 – 45 cm) to accommodate the long taproot. Germination normally occurs in 2-3 weeks, and the shoot will emerge after approximately 2 months. Germination is hypogeal (the shoot emerges without any cotyledons).
Growth is slow for the first two years as the root system establishes but it accelerates thereafter. Trees usually bear fruit in five to eight years once the saplings reach approximately 6 feet (2 meters). You must have at least two trees for cross pollination. Keep seedlings free of weeds with mulch and protect from wildlife.
